RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY

THE EVOLUTION AND TYPES OF RAM

EVOLUTION

The relentless need to boost memory performance in today’s computers for increasingly powerful system processors has prompted the advancement in RAM technology.DDR5 is the most current standard for a ram; only the latest motherboards and processors are compatible with the RAM of this generation.
With Each generation of RAM improving on the previous one for faster speeds and more bandwidth, here is a brief look at the various Ram generations before the DDR5.

DECODE RAM

GENERATIONS OF RAM

1

SDRAM

Since it was developed in 1988, it is probably the most ancient RAM generation.SDRAM modules are designed to synchronize with the timing of the central processing unit (CPU). They can only read/write one time per clock cycle.
2

DDR

After the SDRAM, the DDR (double data rate) generation was later introduced in 2000.DDR transfers data to the processor on both the downbeat and upbeat of the clock signal, so twice per cycle. This makes it significantly faster than SDRAM models, as it uses only one edge of the clock signal to transfer data.
3

DDR2

DDR2 was introduced in 2003. It uses the same internal clock speed as DDR but is twice faster when compared to DDR due to an improved bus signal, the transfer rates are fast due to the enhanced input/output bus signal. DDR2 has a 4-bit prefetch, which is twice that of DDR. DDR2 can also reach data rates of 533 to 800MT/s.
4

DDR3

DDR3 module was introduced in 2007. Its bandwidth and transfer rate were two times that of DDR2. With reduced power consumption from 1.8 to 1.5V, this was great news to those using battery-operated devices.
5

DDR4

In 2014, seven years after the release of DDR3, DDR4 became available. It came with a lower operating voltage of 1.2 V, and higher transfer rates than the previous generations.DDR4 was more efficient than DDR3 as it consumed less power, was much faster, and could process multiple data requests within a clock cycle.
